When the Water Stops

Sometimes the tap goes quiet: a main break, a boil notice, a frozen pipe. A few calm steps, taken ahead of time, mean your family still has water for drinking, cooking and washing up while you wait.

What to do, step by step

  1. Store water now. Plan on 1 gallon per person, per day, for at least 3 days, plus extra for pets. Use clean, food-grade containers and label them with the date.
  2. Know your shutoff. Find your home's main water shutoff before you need it, so you can stop a leak or protect your pipes quickly.
  3. Follow local guidance. If your water utility issues a boil notice or other advisory, follow its instructions until it is lifted.
  4. Rotate and refresh. Swap water you fill yourself about every 6 months, and keep a pack of water in every go-bag.
  5. Choose an everyday filter. A good filter helps with taste and everyday use and helps you make the most of the water you have. Check each product page for what a filter does and doesn't remove.
